AN OUTDOOR LIGHTING FIXTURE SHOULD BE SELECTED FOR FUNCTION AS WELL AS LOOKS

Outdoor Lighting FixtureChoosing an outdoor lighting fixture isn’t just about look. A good choice should also take into account the function of the light and its durability.

Decorative outside lighting is becoming a huge business. Commercial properties have long used outdoor accent lighting to beautify their properties and extend its usable hours. But now consumers have just as many options in choosing outdoor lighting fixtures.

Outdoor lighting is available as either line voltage (wired to the electrical system of your home), low voltage (plugged into a transformer in your home and wired together) or solar (powered by the sun and not wired to anything).

If the fixture is to provide light next to the house for a particular task, line voltage may make sense. Illuminating a doorway, providing bright light for specific tasks (outdoor grilling for example) are examples.

If the fixture is for accent lighting either low voltage or solar powered lights should be considered. There are advantages and disadvantages to both options and consumers should choose based on their preferences.

Fixtures are often less important than the light they produce

The effect that needs to be created is also important in choosing a lighting fixture. If the aim is to highlight a central point of the landscape – a beautiful tree, or pond perhaps – the light itself is far more important than the fixture. In fact, the fixture should be pretty much hidden so its look is not that important. But if the fixture itself will be in full view – for instance pathway lighting, or driveway lights – then the fixture needs to have a look and feel that will fit into the overall theme and contribute to the beauty the consumer is trying to create.

Durability is important as well. There are many inexpensive exterior light fixtures available at any home store but there is no guarantee they will last very long. Weather, particularly extreme moisture and cold will often be too much for these cheap versions. You get what you pay for.

There are endless choices in selecting exterior light fixtures. With a bit of research, consumers are able to choose what suits them best and enjoy beautiful nightscapes for years and years.
